2022 Hayes Family News
Is it us or do things seems to keep getting crazier? 2022 was certainly busy and featured both very happy milestones and and some very sad events. Here are a few..
We want to wish you and yours a very happy holiday season and a healthy, safe and prosperous 2023.
- Simon and Debi
- We rang in the New Year in our home on the shores of Lake Tahoe, digging out from a series of huge snow storms that prevented any travel in the mountains. Fortunately, Aidan and Rory were able to get out eventually, as were Peter and Keke who had spent Christmas with us. It made for great skiing for a while but was the last major snowfall we had in 2022.
- In June we had to say goodbye to our dear old Labrador Rosie, who reached the ripe old age of 15 and a half but was increasingly struggling to get around
- We (Simon and Debi) travelled to the UK, France and Switzerland in June and July. Most of the time was spent in Switzerland and the UK with family but we did manage to spend a few days wine tasting in Burgundy, staying in a beautifully restored 13th century abbey.
- Having decided to split our time between the USA and Europe going forward, we committed to purchasing an apartment in Divonne-les-Bains, France. This is very near the Swiss border and only about 10 minutes drive from where Simon's Dad and brother live. The only downside to it was that it didn't come with a kitchen. So after a very long process to close the sale (common in France ) and to procure and install a new kitchen alongside new furniture, the apartment should be ready to move in to by late December.
- In June, Rory graduated Magna Cum Laude from Santa Clara Law School and obtained his Juris Doctor (JD) . After cramming for a further three months, he passed the California Bar exam, so is now licensed to practice law in California
- In September, Simon and Debi travelled to Bora Bora in French Polynesia to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. Spending two weeks in the tropics and enjoying the diving and nature on this awesomely beautiful island was clearly a highlight of the year.
- We travelled back to Switzerland in October as Simon's mother, Anne, had been hospitalized with a series of issues that turned out to be complications from advanced meningeal cancer. She fought bravely but very sadly Anne died on November 10th 2022. This was heartbreaking for the whole family.
- There was a mad scramble to plan Anne's funeral. Fortunately, the day overall went well. Aidan, Tristan and and Rory all were able to be there (Tristan playing the bagpipes was a highlight of the service). It was wonderful to see so many old friends despite the very sad occasion.
- Simon has stayed in Switzerland to help Ken and deal with the aftermath of Anne's passing. Debi has been splitting her time between seeing her family in Evesham and Switzerland. We are both also preparing to move into the new apartment in France.
- Tristan is wrapping up his PhD at Cambridge University, UK. He finally finished his paper and had it accepted for publication by Current Biology. He should also finish and submit his thesis before the end of the year. In 2023 he plans to take up a post-doctorate position at Leuven University in Belgium.
- Aidan is still working as a manager at Lockheed Martin in Sunnyvale. He and Jessica continue to renovate and improve their home San Mateo, CA . He enjoys the California outdoor life of biking, running and skiing.
We want to wish you and yours a very happy holiday season and a healthy, safe and prosperous 2023.
