2023 Hayes Family News
After 2022, we were hoping for a quiet year but the universe had other ideas...
- Simon and Debi
- Simon spent Christmas 2022 with his dad, Ken, and brother Andrew and family in Nyon Switzerland
- Debi travelled to Evesham to spend Christmas with her mum, Doreen, and family in Evesham. Unfortunately both Debi and Doreen contracted Covid just before Christmas and so Doreen spent Christmas in hospital and Debi spent it quarantined alone at her mum's house.
- Unfortunately Doreen had to stay in hospital until February when she was discharged into a care home. So at that point, we returned to Evesham to help care for Doreen and support the family.
- As if all that wasn't crazy enough, Tristan's paper on sequencing Beethoven's genome was finally published in March and received significant media coverage worldwide. He came up to Evesham and was doing the press interviews from the sitting room.
- Doreen sadly died on March 14th 2023, at the age of 92.
- Doreen's remembrance was held on 11th April at the nearby Vale crematorium. It was a beautiful service attended by her extended family from children to her seven great-grand children, many of whom spoke in remembrance. Aidan, Tristan and Rory attended and Tristan played the bagpipes.
- We spent May back in Divonne, spending more time with Simon's Dad and family as well as sorting out the new apartment. All this travel meant that from June 2022 to June 2023, Simon and Debi were at home in Incline Village for less than two months.
- We returned to Incline in June, ready for a bit more of of a relaxing summer. Simon continued with his long-held ambition of training to become a private pilot, flying out of the local Truckee and Reno airports.
- Rory landed a job as an attorney with the California Civil Rights Law group where he started as a contractor before being hired full time in September.
- Just when things were calming down in July, we saw a house we really liked come up for sale and decided to buy it. That meant a scramble to pack and move at the end of August (for the third time in as many years). It is a great house but like every move, will require a lot of work to furnish and finish it.
- October saw us back in Divonne/Nyon to attend the interment of Simon's mother Anne's ashes at the Cemetery in Nyon in a small family ceremony. It is a beautiful plot overlooking the lake.
- While in Nyon, we spent time with his Dad, Andrew and Anfissa as well as a very active Henry and Aria!
- We made another trip to Evesham in November, and we also met up with Tristan and got to see his new house in Cambridge. Tristan is working for the Cambridge Archaeology Unit while finalizing his PhD. He completed his viva in October and now just needs to submit a few (minor) corrections to be done!
- We were able to celebrate Ken's birthday back in Switzerland at the beginning of December which was a nice occasion at Le Buffet de la Gare restaurant in Celigny.
- Aidan and Jessica are both doing very well, at an advanced stage of planning for a significant remodel to their home.
- We are heading back to Incline Village for Christmas and look forward to spending it with Aidan and Jessica, as well as Tristan and Rory, as they all plan to join us up in the mountains for the Holidays.
